Tee Time Trivia   Playing Golf was outlawed by King James II of Scotland in 1457. The King thought his subjects were spending too much time golfing and ignoring their archery practice.
Beatrix Hoyt won the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1896 at the age of 16. She won the gold
medal for stroke play 5 years in a row and retired from golf at age 20. Other than
retiring at 20, what I found interesting were her winning scores for the
18 hole stroke play:
The 1st U.S. Women's Amateur was won by Mrs. C.S. Brown in 1895. Mrs. Brown's 18 hole score of 132 was enough to clinch the victory.
Men have women golfers to thank for the golf bag.An English women's golf group, calling themselves Westward Ho!, invented the golf bag around 1870 to carry the increasing number of clubs needed to play. Before the bag was invented, players and caddies juggled up to six clubs in their hands or under their arms. Westward Ho!'s new invention could carry up to 12 clubs, and some of the other paraphernalia needed to play golf.

1971 Alan Shepard, a commander of the Apollo 14 space mission, hit a golf ball on the moon with a specially constructed club similar to a 6 iron.
Many of the caddies in Japan are women. When a golfer finishes a round, their bag is put on a scale. The caddie is then paid according to how much weight they carried around the golf course.

By 1900 the United States had over 1000 golf courses. At the time, this was more courses than the rest of the world combined.
The first tee was patented in 1889 by W. Bloxom and A. Douglas in Scotland. Before this date mounded sand was used to elevate the ball.
The first tee patented in the United States was by Prosper L. Senat. His annulus-shaped device was made of paper or cardboard and doubled as a scorecard. I would think this would make playing in the rain very difficult.
William St. Clair formed a golf club in 1744, called "The Gentleman Golfers of Leith". Later the name was changed to "The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers". For 45 years the clubs golf course consisted of 5 holes, until it bought a large plot of land in Musselburgh. The course is now known as Muirfield.
