The duffer had one major flaw in his game. He was standing too close to the ball after he hit it.

South Shore Golf Course (Syracuse IN)

Duffy's Review

I had not played South Shore in several years. On my return I was surprised at the excellent course conditions and the extensive Clubhouse renovations. All of the daily operations have been moved into a larger building that is impressively clean. I talked to several employees while I was there and each was as friendly and courteous as the last. As I was preparing to play there were several families arriving to play together. This is a great course to take the family. With a par 71 and rating\slope of 70.8\129 it is playable for all levels.

As you start this course you are lulled into believing that it’s too easy. The first hole is a 275 yard par 4, drivable for many players. #2 is fairly easy but after that the course grows some teeth. At 580 yards the par 5 3rd changes things. Out of bounds left runs the entire length of the hole and trees spotted along the right will add some penalty to wayward shots. If you can keep it down the center you still have all 580 yards to travel. Getting home on 2 here is reserved for the Big Boys.

The 6th hole, a 485 yard par 5, is an extremely tempting risk\reward situation. This hole dog-legs hard right, about 190 yards out from the tee and cutting the corner makes it very reachable in 2. The risk part comes from the mature trees at the corner. Clear these monsters and your home free, hit one of them and you are in a depression with nothing but leaves and limbs between you and the green. This hole has one more deterrent, a small marshy area left and front of the green slightly wrapping that side.

The back nine is mostly down and back and almost completely flat, but it is not without its’ interesting holes. That would be the par 3s. # 14 plays at 145 yards and has two large trees acting as goal posts on each side of the approach to the slightly raised green. Cart path right and another large tree left could but some real hurt on your scorecard if you miss this small green. #16 is another small green very well guarded by a line of trees on the left and an over-grown oak on the right front corner, no more than two paces from the fringe.

As an overview I enjoyed South Shore Lake Wawasee. Every par 3 here had its’ own challenge. If it wasn’t guarded by trees it was 240 yards hill-to-hill. The greens were medium-slow with good roll and the course was immaculate. The scratch golfer would find very few challenges but the family that plays golf together will have an enjoyable day. The facility also has a driving range to warm up on, so you don’t have to compete against your siblings without a little practice.
