Duffy's Review

We visited Pond View golf course in July of 2004, it was very hard to find. The address is Star City, Indiana but it is actually southwest of this small town, off the beaten path.

As usual we walked on without a tee time and were greeted by a very friendly lady behind the counter. She had no problem with our walk on status and checked their computer to make sure we would not be taking someone else's space. We paid the very reasonable greens fee and were off to the course.

I really don't have much to say about Pond View golf course, but there are a few items of interest.
This facility has two distinctly different 9's. The front seemed very short (3030 yards from the back) and had extremely tight fairways with several blind tee shots. Some fairways are so close that an errant tee shot could easily put you two fairways over. From the look of the grass it was built a long time ago and had not been changed since. One VERY unique feature was the 5th green. The wildly sloping putting surface (about an 8' drop from back to front) was highlighted by a sandtrap positioned two-thirds up and centered on the green. I guess the designers thought it would be a distinguishing feature, but I think there are reasons for sandtraps being positioned AROUND the green not in the middle of 'em.

The back nine was a different story. Tee shots still required accuracy but the hole designs were more interesting. The mature trees and undulating fairways made this side much more enjoyable. There were no "tricked-out" greens and at par 35 (3310 yards from the back) there were more opportunities for Drivers and longer second shots.
The two holes that impressed me the most were the 11th and 18th. No. 11 is a 395 yard par 4 that requires an accurate tee shot. Standing on the tee box the hole accommodates a left to right shot. If your tee shot is straight you're fine but the trees on the right will make the right to left shot difficult.

I didn't ask, but in my opinion the 18th is the courses signature hole. This 500 yard par 5 was just plain fun to play. The tee box is elevated and your looking down to a fairway with water bordering the entire length of the right side. The left is rough with trees and bushes making a second shot from there very difficult. You could see the green in the distance and it appeared a shot in the center of the fairway would be ideal. I should have looked at the card because the green was not where I thought it was. There is a green straight away from the center of the fairway, but it's a practice green of some kind. The 18th green is actually tucked into some trees on the left. A center-cut tee shot will force you to lay-up to the turn and then approach the green from there. That's what a par 5 is all about, right? Three shots to the green and two putts.

Beginners and intermediate players will enjoy Pine View golf course. The greens were very slow and the pace of play was slow as well. There were several families playing the day I was there and any course that can be played as a family automatically gets extra points. The clubhouse was very nice and the atmosphere comfortable.
