PHOTOS & REVIEW Pine Valley Resort & CC (Elizabethtown KY) Click on image to Enlarge Duffy's Review We played Pine Valley on May 1, 2003. It was the second time I was able to play there, the first was in March 2003. The first time we were there I felt that the time of year was not a fair test for reviewing the course. The Bermuda grass fairways were still dormant and the greens still had their winter coat, so we decided to return later in the year. The conditions were not much better the second time we played Pine Valley. Members, don’t get me wrong here, Pine Valley’s course has a nice lay-out and some challenging holes. The abundance of mature trees, water and dog-legged holes make the course very interesting, but the maintenance leaves a great deal to be desired. It seemed like the fairways had as many weeds as they did grass. The greens were still fuzzy and didn’t appear to be rolled on a regular basis, very erratic, bouncy roll. While I enjoyed playing here, the conditions were disappointing. On the upside, $28.00 for 18 holes and a cart (pricing is subject to change) is good for a round of golf. I just want to be honest in my assessment of the course. Let’s get into the parts of the course that stood out for me. #4 is a 476 yard par 5 with a slight double dog-leg, right then left. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you have an easy eagle or even birdie here just because of the yardage. From the tee boxes, it’s 210 yards to the pond that splits the hole in half. With no place to bail out you have to lay-up. If you can pin-point your tee shot to the right corner of the fairway, you have a pretty good view of the green and a shorter second shot. A center or left fairway placement will put the row of trees across the water on the left in play. Second shot, 266 yards, is still not a given. The green slopes away on all sides and has woods behind. A smart golfer would lay-up the second shot as well, instead of breaking out the 3 wood and trying to stop it on the green. 3 wood it is! I think I was lucky to clip the tree branch and slow down my ball. Easy up and down for birdie. # 9, playing 159 yards, is a down hill par 3. To par this hole, hitting the green is essential. If you come up short, you have an uphill chip from the depression and if you’re long the green slopes away from you, making it very difficult to stop. Both shots are from heavy rough.
The last hole I’ll comment on is the 415 yard, par 4, 17th. WOW! This is just one of those holes that leaves an impression. The tee box and green are pretty close to the same elevation, but there is an 80 foot drop from the tee box. To make it simple it’s down hill from the tee, then back up hill to the green. Adding to the character of this hole is a creek at the bottom of the hill and a dog-leg right, as you start your ascent back up to the green. I crushed a good drive and had about 130 left to the green. I had to walk to the top of the ridge to see the green from where my ball was. To repeat myself, WOW! Pine Valley has a Bar and Restaurant, as well as over night accommodations. One of the features of the facility that I liked was an outside deck. I know the deck thing isn’t unusual but the mats for the driving range are. You can drive golf balls while your friends are eating and drinking right behind you. If you choose to exercise this option, I hope your friends are kinder than mine. If not, I trust you are prepared for the abuse. Pine Valley’s course is suitable for all levels of play. Beginners will find it very tough and you scratch players will find several holes that challenge your ability. For more information on Pine Valley CC & Resort check out the links below
