PHOTOS & REVIEW Glynn's Creek Golf Course (Long Grove, IA) Click on image to Enlarge Duffy's Review The first thing I want to say about Glynn’s Creek Golf Club is, Major Clean! This facility is maintained to some of the highest standards I have ever seen. Even the natural areas looked like they were under orders to grow in a visually pleasing manner. The clubhouse, carts, driving range and the course, of course, were all immaculate. The people working here have adopted these high standards as well. I walked on, as usual, without a tee time and was greeted with friendly, courteous and helpful service. I had the opportunity to observe the teaching pro being bombarded by patrons wanting to talk to him. He handled each one in turn and kept smiling the entire time. I would have killed somebody. This is another course with 18 great holes. Since I can’t comment on each one, I will pick a few stand-outs. Let’s start at the beginning, #1 a 429 yard par 4. This dog-leg left is entirely uphill. A generous landing area as the fairway turns, but if you go left, you’re lost, and a tee shot right makes this a very long hole. The green is typical for the course, fast-medium with challenging undulations. Not many flat putts at this course. If you over shoot or go right on your approach, I hope you have practiced the downhill chip out of heavy rough. There is a severely sloping hill on the back and right that starts about one pace off the green. #7 is a 505 yard par 5, downhill tee shot then uphill to the green. This hole is not really a dog-leg, but it does have a gentle sweep to the left. A tee shot hit center fairway will give you an unobstructed 2nd to the green. The problem comes with the green being significantly uphill from there. I hit a fairly descent tee shot but still had to use 5 wood to get up the hill. If you miss right there are 2 grass bunkers waiting to swallow your ball. The second one had a nice meal with mine. While we’re on the subject of food, I must not have fed it well enough, it took another bite when I duffed my chip. Tee to green, or from the green looking back, a beautiful hole.
A real quick comment on the 14th. This 371 yard par 4 has a hard dog-leg left. A driver or 3 wood over the corner, then a chip and putt for birdie. One of those holes that you big hitters are going to go for off the tee. You better hit it! Miss left and it’s all uphill from there, right and you are trying to figure out how to slice a 20 yard shot around that tree. This course will awaken any demons you have lurking in your game. It also has its’ own Monster, the 600 yard par 5 17th. This hole is relatively “level”, (nothing’s flat at Glynn’s Creek), and straight away. You can miss right and still recover, miss left and that’s a $2.00 ball gone. I found this hole exceptionally beautiful. The fairway is lined with alternating woods and natural areas. For those of you who don’t know what “Natural Areas” are, the best definition I can come up with is: A perfect place to lose a golf ball. High grass and other ground cover, with flowers. Pretty to look at, but pretty miserable to play from. Players note: “Natural Areas” take years to develop and seconds to destroy. If you need to look for a ball in one, carefully walk in and look. Don’t take your cart, driving or pull cart, into these areas. Granted, they are a menace to golfers, but that’s what they are there for. A very long hole, with uneven lies, regardless of where your ball lands. The green is surrounded with long relentless rough that ambles its way to the front parts of the green. Every once in awhile a golfer gets a good hole, for me it was this one. A poor tee shot, a good second and a great third, put me in birdie position on this rolling green. This was the hole that allowed me to believe I could play this game. A bogey on the 18th put my game back into perspective. Fame is fleeting. A very enjoyable course, and playable for all levels. The course can be walked, but if you are carrying your own bag, it could be a long day. Warm up the hot tub for those aching legs. The course is maintained to perfection and well planned. Fantastic greens and scenery make this course a “must play” for anyone in a 2-3 hour radius. For more information on Glynn's Creek Golf Club check out the links below
