Scorecard - Simple Handicap (Page 2 0f 2)
With all the knowledge you’ve gained, a four man match is still too simple. Let’s try three men and a lady. We’ll stick with our original 10 and 16 Handicappers and throw in a 19. The charming young woman is a 21 handicap and she’s playing from the Red Tees. The lowest handicap is the “base”, in our game it’s the 10. To even the match the 16 gets 6 strokes, the 19 gets 9 strokes and our 21 is allotted 11. Confused? Just subtract the low handicap from each of the other player’s handicap and you will have the hole adjustments correct. When you’re done with the math, put your abacus back in your bag and mark each hole as we did before (Fig. 3)

One thing to notice in the above example, the Red Tees have different hole difficulty (handicap). Our young Ms. does not necessarily get strokes on the same holes as the men. Look at the handicap rating and mark off 1 – 11 as determined by the Red Tee section.

The scores from our original players were unchanged. Our additional players really threw a wrench into the 10 handicap’s fantastic back nine. With their hole score adjustments they either tied or won the holes that counted, snatching victory from our sand-bagging ace.
There are other methods for handicapping players. This one is very simple but effective. I hope it adds a little enjoyment, and good competition, to your next round of GOLF.
