Scorecard basics   (Page 1 0f 2)

For some reason we tend to believe that our knowledge is not unique, everyone else should know the things that we do. I am just as guilty of this as anyone. This was driven home by a friend of mine who had no idea how to use a scorecard. I’ve done it for years, therefore it’s simple to me. I started to explain how a scorecard is used and all the different information supplied on one. I quickly realized just how confusing it can be for a person who has never seen a scorecard. One of our visitors Emailed me the question, “What does the Handicap section of a scorecard mean?”. That question prompted me to write this article.

If you are a veteran player most of this information will seem like common knowledge to you. Read on anyway there may be one or two facts that could interest you. If you are a beginner or unsure of some of the features of a scorecard, I hope this helps. This is the first of a series of articles on the scorecard. We will get into more advanced application in upcoming articles.

All scorecards are different, but most have the same information with a slightly different lay-out. The example card for these articles is a re-creation of 9 holes from an actual scorecard, one of my favorite courses (the nines have been changed to protect the innocent). We will try to cover it line by line. (Fig. 1) is an overview of the card.

Scorecards have vertical and horizontal sections, a grid system. To begin we divided this one into the vertical sections (Tee Set, Hole Stats, Total).

(FIG. 1)

The “Tee set”, displays the tee name, course rating and slope. The “PAR” line displays what is a par score for that hole and the “HANDICAP” line compares the difficulty of that hole to the rest of the holes on the course. Basically this is the header for the rest of the card and the corresponding information for that line is read, or entered, in the appropriate section of the grid. The four blank lines are where the names of the player(s) are entered and are separated by the “HOLE #” line for easy reference to which hole you are on. This card has an added feature that I like, the little box following the course rating and slope. After you decide which set of tees you are going to play you check this box. If you look back at the card someday you can tell what tees you played from on that day.

The “Hole stats” is the information for each hole. Hole number 5 from the Blue tees has a yardage of 365 and is the 3rd easiest hole on the course (16 Handicap). The stats change if you are playing from the Red (Ladies) tees. Now the hole plays at 345 yards and is the 8th hardest. If that is a little confusing, don’t worry, it should be cleared up by the end of this article. The “Total” section is exactly that, the total of each line in the “Hole stats” area. The only line that does not have a total in this area is the “Handicap” line. These numbers are a rating system so adding them together serves no purpose. If you would like to improve your math skills you could add them, but I don’t think it would help your golf game.
