WOULD YOU? In my post script I always write "Play often, Play fair and above all, HAVE FUN!". Here's an example of play fair that's definitely worth writing about. The place was the 2004 Chrysler Classic of Greensboro, the player was Tom Lehman. Tom was on the second green putting for par when he thought the ball might have moved slightly. At the instant it happened, he was about to strike his ball for a par putt, and wasn't certain that the ball had moved. As he played on the putt stayed with him. After 3 more holes he went to the rules official and told them what he "thought" might have happened. He asked if anything could be spotted on videotape. After review there was no evidence of a foul that could be supported by the video. Mr. Lehman called the penalty, on himself, anyway.
There is an old saying that has stuck with me through the years, and I can't think of a better example to emphasize its' meaning: "The truest judge of a man's character is what he would do if he was certain no one else would ever find out about it." I am not capable of judging Tom Lehman's character, (or worthy to, for that matter) but if this is how he handles himself in everyday life, I would be proud to call the man a friend of mine. Footnote: Tom Lehman finished tied for 4th. Play often, Play fair and above all, HAVE FUN!. I love this game! Duffy |
