Yes sir! That's my ball. Have you ever found your ball off in the rough, hit a great shot to the green, then realize that wasn't your ball you found back there? If you haven't, consider yourself fortunate. If you have, join the crowd. Many golfers have either gained or lost a ball from misidentification and this article will describe an option that could minimize your losses or potential embarrassment. USGA Rule 12-2: The responsibility of playing the proper ball rests with the player. Each player should put an identification mark on his ball. Don't let this happen to you! You know that you are playing the NEW "Tempest KXCRL 9000" as you step on the first tee. You hit a screaming drive that hooks beautifully into the dogleg, down the hill and out of sight. As you turn the corner, with your playing partner still complimenting you on the superb performance, there's a golfer lining up a shot on YOUR ball. "Wait! Wait!" After a short conversation (argument?) they say that this ball is theirs and yours is over in the rough, behind that tree. Grudgingly you take the courteous route and concede the argument. Your game steadily declines because of your anger for that "Lying so and so" who stole your ball. I know this is my ball. So you are not put into the situation described above here is the suggestion. Mark your ball in a distinct way. The odds of another player with the "Tempest KXCRL 9000" are pretty good. The odds of another player with the "Tempest KXCRL 9000" that has a black dot on each side of the logo aren't. Take a look at the picture below, these are a few examples of marking a golf ball.
It doesn't have to be pretty, the important thing to notice in the photo is all the markings are around the logo. You can't see it in the photo but there is an identical mark on the other side as well. Golfers will normally check to see if the ball they found is the type they are playing, but they will not pick it up and examine the entire sphere. You can use dots, words, lines, circles or if you're really talented draw a picture of your favorite pet. Make it yours. Lastly, keep your mark consistent. When you find a design that suits your personality, or at least your needs, stick with it. (True: I found one of my own balls in the woods that I had lost on a previous occasion. I could tell by my mark.) When you buy a dozen golf balls mark them while you're relaxing in front of the TV or while you are waiting for your tee time to arrive. It takes a little effort, but next time you will win that argument. And one more thing, that was your ball behind the tree. Play often, Play fair and above all, HAVE FUN!. I love this game! Duffy |
