Putter on a string

The fastest way to lower your score is to be confident with your putter. If you can two putt, instead of three putt, think of how that will effect your score. The technique that follows is one of many that will improve your putting ability. You will need a 5 foot piece of string, a ball, your putter and practice.

Anchor the string on each end, on a reasonably flat surface. If you are indoors a piece of good tape or heavy object will do, outdoors use tees and wrap the string around the base. The desired result is that the string is straight and tight. Place your putter so that the back is around 12 - 16 inches from the back anchor, and the tip is just slightly away from the string. The object here is to stroke the putter so that the tip remains a constant distance from the string, giving you a straight and even plain.

The first thing to remember about putting is your hands and wrists are there to HOLD the putter, not to strike the ball. Your shoulders should be the only thing moving during a putt. OK, enough with the lecture already, let’s get started. Turn your shoulders back keeping the putter parallel with the string. Remember that your pivot point is at your shoulders, so the distance between the club and the ground will increase as you move away from and then through the ball. Practice this a few times until you are comfortable with your shoulders making the turn. Now pivot your shoulders forward and through your address position, keeping that parallel position with the string. Don’t stop your forward movement until your putter is at least 3 - 4 inches off the ground. This extra follow-through will help you avoid slapping the ball and stopping your forward movement at impact. When you are comfortable and confident that your stroke is even try it with a ball.

Place your putter back at the string and then place the ball in the middle of your putter. You want to putt the ball having it stop about 4 inches past the far anchor. The adjustment you will make is on the backswing, not the follow-through. Take the putter back just a couple of inches and then stroke through the ball (until the putter is 3 - 4 inches off the ground). You will have to adjust how far back to take the putter depending on the surface you are practicing on. The only thing left to do here is practice, practice, practice.

Play often, Play fair and above all, HAVE FUN!.

I love this game!
